A few weeks ago I looked at my calendar and couldn’t believe how jam packed 2015 already was. I am extremely grateful for a thriving small business and all it has done for me and my family, but I knew I was going to be diving into this year head first and deeper than any other year. When I noticed a few days in February around a holiday weekend that nothing was scheduled AND my husband had a few days off of work, I knew we had to take a little R&R trip. Something small and affordable, but away from Hampton Roads.
We have been wanting to take a trip up to Wintergreen in the Blue Ridge Mountains for a while now. We used to go back before kids and snowboard and stay in random hotels with no schedule in mind. But let’s be real, with two little ones in tow, structure is needed. I researched staying at the resort, but being so last minute it was either booked for rooms in our budget or rooms that weren’t were way out of my budget. I was going to opt for a hotel about 20-30 minutes from the mountain, when a friend gave me the recommendation of staying at Cabin Creekwood. She said they were cabins about 10 minutes from Wintergreen. I researched them and they were SO reasonably priced (they also offer military discount), where it almost made you skeptical on how the place. But I went with it and booked for two nights.
This. Place. Is. Awesome.
Seriously. About a 3 hour drive from Virginia Beach, we went at the beginning of a snowstorm. Totally a setting you would want for a winter getaway…to a cabin..in the mountains. With prepped food, snacks, wine and games in tow, we were totally prepared for 2 days of R&R and some snow tubing fun at Wintergreen.
We arrived before the scheduled check in time and our cabin was ready and we were able to check in earlier, which was so convenient. I am using the term cabin loosely. This place was actually a small two-bedroom house, with a full kitchen, a wood burning stove, a huge deck and it’s own swing set. So very clean, which made me feel more at home. The innkeepers were so friendly and hospitable. One of the owners is even from NJ and grew up close to the area I am from, I swear for such a small state, NJ is ALWAYS on the map ; ) #jerseylove
They gave us a huge armload of firewood to get us started and my little peeps even made friends with their children and had some sledding fun.
It was so nice to be away from the everyday, tucked away in a little cabin. We played games, and I had a makeover party with Ella, had a dance party, played outside, went snow tubing the next day, visited Devils Backbone brewery where I might have ate the best pulled pork sandwich ever and enjoyed some good old fashioned quality time as our little family of four. This place didn’t even have working cable, which I loved. They did have a working DVD player though with full seasons of Full House DVD’s. Total score.
It’s small trips like this that give you that refresher you need sometimes in life. Let’s you recharge and remember small things that are important amongst all the craziness of everyday. If you are looking for a place to get away and recharge and are on a budget, I highly recommend this place. We can’t wait to go back this spring! Tell them I sent you!
In the meantime, check out some pictures from our little mountain getaway!
